A (Late) July Brain Declutter
Glad to report I’ve survived the third heat wave of the summer with my sanity intact. Not sure how many I have left in me but it looks like this will be the norm going forward, so I’ll have to find a way to manage. I have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science and a lot of my professors emphasized the need for humanity to adapt to the change in climate that we caused. This means green walls to cool spaces efficiently and experimentation with desalination. We have the means to do all of this but unfortunately we’ve been slow to start and have lost valuable time as a result. Not sure why my mind has taken me here. Maybe I’m feeling a sense of urgency as it was 100 degrees, real feel 108 degrees earlier this week.
Summer at the Cinema
In movie news (the reason we’re actually here) I went to see Princess Mononoke in theaters as a part of Fathom Event’s Ghibli Fest 2024 and it was incredible. I have seen this film so many times but never on the big screen and the experience was absolutely captivating. The size gave me a chance to really appreciate the art direction of this film and I can definitively say that a tv or a laptop doesn’t do it justice. The story itself also felt different, giving credence to the idea that Miyazaki movies resonate more with you as you age. For the first time in my life, I could really empathize with the people of Irontown and their struggles for a home and a living. Suddenly, I understood why they may have a disregard for the creatures of the forest as they are blinded by their own need for survival. I don’t agree with their actions but it was nice to know that I’m capable of extending my empathy past it’s previous boundaries. It’s nice when a film helps you realize something new about yourself. Don’t miss out on that if you ever have the chance to experience it.
12-Year-Old Me is Losing It
This year the band FLOW is performing at Otakon and I plan on fighting my way in to see them. For the uninitiated, FLOW is a band famous for their anime openings. Specifically their Naruto openings of which got me through middle and high school. If I actually get in, it’ll be the realization of a lifelong dream I didn’t know I had. Or wouldn’t admit to myself because the odds of me getting to see them was always slim. Cross your fingers for me as seats are first come first serve and I already missed out on VIP and Reserved Seating passes.
Back to the City
I’m in desperate need of an NYC day where I watch a broadway show, dodge child sized rats, buy skincare in Ktown, and walk 40,000 steps. Therefore, I’ve scheduled another Whitney day to do just that. You have no idea how healing this is for me and I couldn’t explain it if I tried.
Where Have all the Good Clothes Gone?
There aren’t enough places to get cute, affordable, and high quality clothing. Everywhere you go there’s loose strings and baffling cuts. Or the price is insulting for what you’re getting. I just feel like clothes are no longer designed with human bodies in mind. Go out and try to find jean shorts right now and you’ll see what I mean.
Pickle-ball Me
Apparently enough millennials are tired of the isolating nature of late stage capitalism and have turned to pickle-ball and running clubs as a way of building community and just getting out of the house to have fun. These activities are bringing back the third spaces we lost in the pandemic and I love to see it. It feels like the people are fighting back. Also, I found out that some of these are free!? Can you believe? We can just make life better for ourselves. It doesn’t have to be complicated or financially devastating.
